Stop trying to find yourself

Trying to find yourself is like putting on a glove and then wondering where your hand went.

No matter how lost you may feel you are always still right there. No matter how far you travel or how many things you do to find yourself, yourself comes along with you- it’s not like an end point where you get to the top of some mountain and say “ah, there myself is”.

“Yourself” is buried under a bunch of mind noise. People who are “lost” are not actually lost, they have just forgotten that they are not their thoughts. Our thoughts are products of our experiences and belief systems that are externally driven into us but those thoughts are not ultimately “us”.

When we say that someone “loses themselves” in an activity I actually think we have it backwards. I think this is when we truly find ourselves. Activities we are passionate about, become fully engaged in and do for their own sake often clear away the incessant thought patterns we associate with our identity leaving the thing that is actually real. These activities force us into a deep state of presence where we feel immense joy.

So stop trying to find yourself and start engaging in activities you truly love and are truly passionate about- you will find yourself alive and well right there.
