Person A is who you think you should be but are not. Person A possesses attributes you think you don’t have. Person B is who you think you are. Person B possesses attributes that are holding you back or more importantly does not possess any of the attributes you think you need in order to have success.
You might identify Person A as being mentally tough, resilient, focused, confident etc.
You might see yourself as being mentally weak, unfocused, shaky etc.
The problem with this scenario is that when there is a separation between who you think you are and who you think you should be you don’t actually ever become the thing you are hoping to become. The main reason is that we attach those attributes to outcomes. In doing so, every outcome serves as evidence that we are moving closer too or further from our ideal state, which means we never actually get there.
“If I achieve X then that is proof that I am Person A”.
“If I do not achieve X then that is proof that I must not be Person A”.
If we achieve X we have a brief moment of identifying as Person A and that feels good but then we usually slide out of that confidence and attach our worthiness of being Person A to a new outcome Y and the cycle starts all over again.
The greatest breakthrough you will have is when you realize you probably already are the thing you are hoping you might one day be. Possessing the attributes of Person A does not depend on achieving X or Y or Z. Possessing the attributes of Person A depends on your approach to the process. If, in the process, you are mentally tough, resilient, focused, determined etc then you already are person A. And when you come to this realization, there will no longer be any distance between who you think you are and who you think you should be. You will realize that you need only continue being yourself to hit the target.
