Patience and Urgency

I have two close friends. Their names are Patience and Urgency.

Patience is super chill. He thinks long term and understands that creating something great doesn’t happen overnight. Patience sees the big picture and understands how important consistency is. Patience is never in a rush to make things happen. He’s pretty zen about stuff.

Urgency is super intense. He is only concerned with what’s happening today and tends to get very uptight about day to day things. Urgency wants the end goal now. He rarely thinks about tomorrow or the next day, he just focuses on one day at a time. “Life is short” “You only live once”, “Carpe Diem”- he’s full of cliche’s.

Both of them hang out with me every day. The problem is that they don’t like each other very much. This can get very awkward. I’m constantly managing their drama- it’s so high-school. Patience finds Urgency very aggressive and confrontational. Urgency thinks Patience is never going to amount to anything.

Patience is a great friend because he understands how important the big picture is and he understands that Rome was not built in a day. He has a great perspective on life and constantly reminds me not to sweat the small stuff. He’s picked me up so many times when I’ve had a bad day or a bad workout and reminded me that those days are all part of the process.

Urgency is also a great friend because he brings so much focus to every situation. He treats everything like it’s the most important thing we’ve ever done. And although he has a tendency to be a bit bullish I’m glad he’s around to make sure the work gets done. I can’t count the number of times he has waltzed into my room and kicked me out of bed when I have reached for the snooze button.

I don’t think I will ever get them to see eye to eye. They just have such dramatically different world views. It’s never easy managing their drama but I’m always grateful they are both part of my life.
